Job description:
Bridge thermal engineering and firmware development to deliver validated, production-ready thermal controls.
Position Summary
The Thermal Control Systems Engineer is the primary technical bridge between thermal engineers and the firmware team. The engineer drives alignment from requirement definition through implementation, integration, tuning, validation, release, and field issue closure—ensuring firmware behavior accurately reflects thermal intent and thermal teams can efficiently verify the implemented solution.
Key Responsibilities
• Serve as the day-to-day technical interface between thermal engineering and firmware controls development for fan, pump, sensor, throttling, protection, and fault-management functions.
• Translate thermal requirements and test data into firmware requirements, control narratives, state diagrams, calibration tables, interface definitions, and measurable acceptance criteria.
• Facilitate requirement and design reviews so thermal assumptions, firmware constraints, dependencies, ownership, and expected behavior are understood and documented before implementation.
• Partner with firmware engineers during implementation by answering domain questions, reviewing proposed logic, resolving requirement gaps, and evaluating tradeoffs without acting as the primary production-code developer.
• Own the thermal-control requirements baseline and maintain traceability from thermal need through firmware implementation, test coverage, defects, waivers, and release evidence.
• Build and maintain control input packages, calibration files, test configurations, and other artifacts required by the firmware development workflow.
• Develop integration and validation plans covering nominal operation, worst-case configurations, sensor faults, fan or pump failures, communication failures, throttling, recovery behavior, and boundary conditions.
• Execute hands-on bench, chamber, subsystem, and system testing; tune settings jointly with thermal and firmware engineers and confirm firmware behavior against thermal acceptance criteria.
• Use logs, telemetry, instrumentation, source-level information, and thermal data to isolate whether failures originate in requirements, calibration, firmware logic, hardware, interfaces, or the physical thermal solution.
• Lead cross-functional teams working directly with different teams such as CPLD, BIOS, and Hardware Engineers and understand controls within the BMC
• Coordinate firmware delivery dates with thermal test windows, hardware builds, qualification milestones, and release schedules; escalate integration risks early with recovery plans.
• Validate and development new tools for use in defining the server thermal control architecture
• Support design reviews, firmware readiness reviews, product qualification, production ramp, and field issue resolution as the thermal-controls integration owner.
Measures of Success
• Thermal requirements reach the firmware team early, are complete and testable, and require minimal rework or reinterpretation.
• Firmware implementations match documented thermal intent across supported configurations, workloads, ambient conditions, transients, and fault scenarios.
• Control packages, calibration inputs, interface definitions, and validation evidence are delivered in time for firmware and hardware milestones.
• Thermal and firmware defects are isolated quickly, assigned to the correct owner, corrected, regression tested, and closed with traceable evidence.
• Changes to thermal limits, sensor strategies, hardware, or firmware behavior are evaluated and communicated promptly across both teams.
• Released controls maintain thermal limits while meeting stability, response-time, acoustic, power, reliability, and serviceability targets.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics, or a related discipline.
• Two or more years of experience in thermal engineering, embedded systems, controls integration, firmware validation, electronics cooling, HVAC/refrigeration controls, or a related field.
• Ability to translate physical-system behavior and thermal performance needs into precise, testable firmware requirements and interface definitions.
• Working knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, feedback control, sensors, actuators, signal conditioning, and fault handling.
• Experience integrating, tuning, troubleshooting, or validating control algorithms on physical hardware.
• Experience with engineering analysis, automation, or programming tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, LabVIEW, or equivalent platforms.
• Ability to read firmware logs, control-flow descriptions, communication specifications, schematics, thermal reports, and test data and connect findings across disciplines.
• Strong technical writing and communication skills, including the ability to resolve ambiguity and build agreement between thermal and firmware engineers.
• Track record of owning cross-functional deliverables, managing dependencies, escalating risks, and driving integration issues to verified closure.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in an engineering discipline with emphasis in controls, thermal sciences, embedded systems, or systems engineering.
• Experience with server or electronics thermal controls, including fan zones, pump controls, component sensors, throttling, management controllers, or out-of-band firmware.
• Experience with model-based design, hardware-in-the-loop or software-in-the-loop testing, digital twins, or model predictive control.
• Familiarity with embedded firmware development, code reviews, version control, defect tracking, and Agile development workflows.
• Knowledge of communication protocols such as Python, C/C++, XML, I²C, SMBus, PMBus, CAN, Modbus, BACnet, or Ethernet.
• Experience with telemetry, register maps, sensor data records, platform identification, calibration management, or automated regression testing.
• Knowledge of functional safety, cybersecurity, FMEA, fault-tree analysis, reliability engineering, or regulatory compliance.
• Experience taking a thermal-control feature from requirements through firmware release, system qualification, production, and field support.
